If you are running a strict insulin-based fast, this is the honest asterisk: the data doesn’t rule out a small cephalic-phase blip, but it also hasn’t shown one large enough to functionally break a fast for most people.
Does it trigger a digestive or hunger response?
A separate, related concern is whether diet soda’s sweetness and carbonation stimulate appetite or gut hormone changes that make fasting harder to sustain — not whether it “breaks” the fast technically, but whether it works against the point of fasting. Research here is mixed and often contradictory: some studies associate regular diet-soda drinkers with altered hunger signaling over time, while others find no meaningful acute effect from a single serving. This is a real open question in the literature, not a settled one, and it’s worth naming as such rather than picking whichever study supports a preference.

That said, “supplies neither of the inputs we think matter” is not the same as “proven not to interfere at all.” The honest position is that human autophagy data are thin across the board, and if autophagy is specifically your goal — rather than a general 16:8 window — the conservative move is plain water, because it removes every variable, including the sweetness and cephalic-phase questions above, rather than trying to resolve them.
